Not even wild weather could dampen the Heartbreakers’ spirit as they kicked off their 2025 City2Surf fundraising campaign in style — and in sneakers! With umbrellas in hand and plenty of good humour, the team gathered to launch their mission to support the Prince of Wales Hospital Emergency Department, raising funds for vital lifesaving equipment.
A huge thank you to everyone who turned up (despite the rain!) and to those who sent well wishes from afar. Special thanks to our long-time major sponsor Graham Baxter (Owner Manager, Mortgage Choice Maroubra), who’s been cheering the Heartbreakers on for all 19 years of this incredible journey. It was also wonderful to welcome Brian Bagshaw, former President of Clovelly Bowling and Recreation Club. Our other amazing sponsors—Coogee Bay Hotel and Mayer Fine Foods Ltd—sent their apologies and continued support.
The afternoon kicked off with a proud moment as Angela Chiew from the POWH Emergency Department was awarded the coveted Heartbreakers cap for her fantastic fundraising efforts. Angela has already raised over $850, topping the team leaderboard! Shout-outs as well to Sam and Garth, who’ve each cracked the $250 mark. So far, the Heartbreakers have raised $3,755, and with a team target of $8,000, the finish line is in sight—but they’ll need everyone’s help to cross it.
David Murphy, Emergency Department Director POWH, spoke passionately about how the funds will directly benefit patients, helping purchase lifesaving tools that make a real difference in moments that matter most. It was a powerful reminder of what Heartbreakers running for.
And a massive thank you to Fabian Heaton for organising the event from start to finish with so much dedication, heart and passion.
From posing for pics to reconnecting with friends and teammates, the event was filled with laughter, warmth and purpose. Rain couldn’t stop this crew.
And this is just the start! With at least four more team events in the pipeline, there are loads of opportunities to join in, whether you’re walking, running, donating—or just cheering us on from the sidelines.
For 19 years, the Heartbreakers—a passionate crew of Prince of Wales Hospital staff, patients and community champions—have been hitting the pavement for a purpose. This year, they’re stepping up again for the ED team who are there when patients need them most.
Support the Heartbreakers today—donate and spread the word!
