Rehabilitation after neurological illness or spinal cord injury can be slow, repetitive and emotionally exhausting. That’s why our Occupational Therapy team is embracing an exciting new tool.
SaeboVR is an immersive virtual-reality system designed to help patients rebuild upper limb strength, cognition and independence. And thanks to donor support, we can now bring this cutting-edge technology to patients who need it most.
Unlike traditional therapy, SaeboVR places patients inside realistic, everyday scenarios, such as reaching into a fridge, hanging washing, feeding a pet or grocery shopping. These simulated environments help patients practice the skills they’ll need when they return home while also receiving instant feedback on progress.
SaeboVR is also cleverly designed to maximise therapy time. Patients can complete high-repetition task practice in a semi-supervised setting, allowing therapists to support more patients without compromising safety or outcomes. This leads to better engagement, improved confidence, reduced “learned non-use” and leads to shorter hospital stays.
The technology will be used across Rehabilitation, Spinal Injuries and Outpatient Services, offering benefits to a wide range of patients with physical or cognitive challenges.
Projects funded through our Annual Grants Program are made possible because of donors like you supporting emerging technologies. Technologies that help patients stay motivated, regain function sooner and take confident steps back into everyday life
