Humans of POWH: Eileen

How long have you been a volunteer at POWH?

24 years.

What’s a rewarding or happy memory you’ve had during your time here as a volunteer at POWH?

Being able to help and care for the patients in the hospital. It’s so important to care for people. I’ve been helping at different departments through the hospital including aged care, welfare, the library and my favourite which is the Volunteers Café. Before COVID, I really enjoyed taking the volunteers out for a day to reward them for all the hard work they do for the hospital and the patients.

What do you enjoy most about volunteering?

I love caring about people and helping the patients in the hospital. People need to care for people. I really appreciate the community we have built within the volunteers and the relationships we have with the patients.

During seasonal periods, we’ve sent out handwritten cards during Christmas to all patients in the hospital to let them know they are thought about and cared for. Everyone is equal here in the hospital.

What would you say to someone who is thinking about volunteering?

They don’t know what they’re missing out on. You won’t regret it. You’ll make plenty of friendships here and build a community. We need more volunteers to help care for our community.
