OUR IMPACT

Upper Gastrointestinal

Endoscopy equipment

Funding of a special video processor and LED light source enhanced and upgraded the endoscopic services provided in POWH and improved the standard of care. The equipment allowed for the Upper Gastrointestinal and Colorectal teams to perform endoscopic procedures in the operating theatres on sick patients with other co-morbidities who require general anaesthetic. The procedure can now be performed in addition to other required interventions thus reducing the need for a second potential anaesthetic or sedation reducing the time spent in hospital.

Cavitron Ultrasonic Surgical Aspirator

We funded a Cavitron Ultrasonic Surgical Aspirator (CUSA) for the Prince of Wales Hospital. The CUSA is an essential device that is used in tumour surgery around the world. It uses low frequency ultrasound energy to dissect or fragment tissue to distinguish between pathologic tissue and normal tissue allowing for improved visibility, less collateral tissue damage and less blood loss during surgery. Because the CUSA device can be fine-tuned, it allows the surgeon to remove tumours with minimal effect on the adjacent tissues. This device is crucial for the removal of brain tumours, spinal cord tumours, and other delicate procedures involving the central nervous system.
